The Coronavirus also known as COVID-19 has and continues to sweep and effected the whole world in a variety of ways. This global pandemic has caused businesses to close, schools to be suspended, restaurants to rethink their business strategy, and has left grocery stores across the world understocked. It has especially been difficult on citizens as there have been thousands of deaths and millions effected. Mandatory and self-quarantine’s have been put in place to limit the spread and help flatten the curve around the world by those directly affected. Governments are requesting that citizens limit the amount of exposure to public places by working and staying at home as much as possible. So, with all this chaos and turmoil how can you continue to grow your MLM business?

1. Use This Time To Focus On Your Business Goals

Goals should come from aspects in your business you would like to be most successful at. A goal not written is only a wish! This sounds silly, but people who write down their goals are far more likely to achieve more, make more money and live happier lives. If you’re not even willing to write your goal down, then you’re not really that serious about succeeding.

Not sure where to start when writing down your goals? Think of what your ultimate goal might would be. Suppose your ultimate goal is to sell more products, then set small goals that will help you achieve your ultimate goal. Examining your priorities is a great way to determine what goals need to be accomplished to help you achieve your ultimate goal.

Take one goal at a time, one week at a time, or even one day at a time and focus on projects or aspects of your work that will help you achieve your goals. You can learn more goal setting tips and tricks by reading our article Setting Goals and Starting Over.

2. Develop An Effective Time Management Strategy

As several of us have been strongly encouraged to work from home this can lead to an adjustment when it comes to time management. Instead of working in a quiet office on a typical work week schedule you may be forced to work at home with kids playing in the background and going off your family’s schedules. There are several ways that you can use time management to help you stay on track:

  1. Balance your work and personal life by determining a separate, distinct work area in your home if possible.
  2. Take advantage of your natural cycles. Do your creative work and important calls when you are more alert during the day.
  3. Recognize and limit distractions and interruptions. Schedule your interruptions by setting up a couple times a day where you are available and open to receive incoming calls, e-mails, messenger, etc. You can set up your voicemail and emails to let people know your availability.
  4. Avoid multitasking when possible. When we multitask our productivity level actually decreases by 40%. It also decreases our memory function making us unable to think clearly and focus.

Want to learn more about how to increase your productivity though time management? Read our article Time Management in Network Marketing.

3. Host Virtual MLM Parties

While it may seem like the world is crashing down on us we do still have the basic commodities that we normally have including power, gas for heating our homes and driving, clean water, and INTERNET! All of these things make it possible for us to continue sharing our business online through online parties!

A live virtual party is much like a home party, but instead of having people coming to your home, you invite guests to participate online through social media. Lets take Facebook as an example; you can now do a Facebook Live presentation where people can join in from literally anywhere with internet connection including the beach, the café, or in the comfort of their own home.

There are many benefits to having virtual parties. Some of the biggest benefits are:

  1. You no longer have a time or distance barrier.
  2. Nobody has to travel and can also watch at their leisure and in the comfort of their own homes.
  3. It can provide a distraction from the chaos going on around.

Learn more about the in’s-and out’s of hosting a virtual party by reading our article The Power of Online Parties.

Just Keep Swimming

As Dory in Finding Nemo so simply put it we need to just keep swimming! Although the world is in a time of chaos and confusion it is still possible to successfully run your MLM business. Taking time to review you goals, ensuring you are focusing on your business through time management, and continuing to generate sales through online parties are all things that can be done to continue to be successful in the MLM industry.

CBD in Multi-Level Marketing – A Follow-Up Look https://xennsoft.com/cbd-in-multi-level-marketing-a-follow-up-look/ Mon, 08 Apr 2019 18:11:25 +0000 https://xennsoft.com/?p=28048 From years of experience, we know that most people starting an MLM company don’t understand and at the very least, underestimate the importance of finding and working closely with the right merchant processor and more importantly, bank.

The post CBD in Multi-Level Marketing – A Follow-Up Look appeared first on MLM Software : multilevel marketing software and services | Xennsoft.

]]>

Back in March, I wrote an article called “Does CBD Have A Future In MLM?”. In it, I covered what Cannabidiol (CBD) is, its history and what the Direct Sales or Multi-Level Marketing industry might need and expect (especially in software) as it gears up to participate in this soon-to-be, 20-Plus Billion-dollar industry. This is a follow-up to that article.

Since that time, Xennsoft has launched three network marketing companies (one Binary and two Uni-Level Hybrids) and is in the process of launching two more.

Here’s What We’ve Seen and Learned.

Merchant Accounts

From years of experience, we know that most people starting an MLM company don’t understand and at the very least, underestimate the importance of finding and working closely with the right merchant processor and more importantly, bank. Typically, most banks, and therefore Processors, won’t deal with MLM companies. Adding CBD to the mix limits the available pool of banks and processors even more. In the short three months that we have launched or attempted to launch companies that sell CBD;

  • Company #1 has still to acquire a working merchant account. After two months of being rejected by the very processor that told them, ‘No problem, we’ll have you set up in no time”, company #1 finally tock our advice and switched to one of our recommended processors. They are still going through underwriting.
  • Company #2 has launched, but had exorbitant reserves added to their account three weeks after their launch. According to their bank, “to cover the high-risk involved with selling CBD”.
  • Company #3 had their account frozen by the bank and it took three weeks for the bank, processor and the client to work out a processing reserve and return policy compromise.

When possible, always read the fine print, it hardly ever matches what is verbally promised. Work directly with the processor and always find out who the underwriting bank is going to be. Your processor may promise you the world, but the bank makes all the rules and holds all the keys to your account.
Side Note: We’re still trying to get each Company to open a secondary account – just in case!

Licensing

Unlike what most people think, the 2108 Farm Bill ruling didn’t change everything. What it did do, was remove the classification of Cannabidiol and Hemp related products from their “Class 1” status as regulated substances. Something that most people don’t know, and something we have had to point out to each client getting into CBD, is that the monitoring of companies wanting to sell CBD related products now falls squarely on the back of each State. For example, in Utah, before selling CBD (in any form) you must first fill out a lengthy Use Report (Ruling R68-26-1) and pay $200 for each product you wish to sell. It’s now up to the State to license and monitor companies wishing to sell CBD.

Self-Regulation and Compliance

For CBD in the US right now, it’s the Wild West. We’re seeing companies in this space make illegal and unsubstantiated claims almost daily. This must stop! Just this last week the FDA, announced that they have sent cease and desist letters to a number of companies in the Direct Sales industry and that they will be monitoring closely, what companies and their Distributors are saying, posting and tweeting. The day (at least for this product) of the FDA not actively and aggressively monitoring the industry is over. The DSA has even gotten in one the act, organizing a first-ever, self-regulating council to, in essence, be a whistle-blower on non-compliant companies within industry. They know they must play nice with the FDA, or their status as an industry moderator may be in jeopardy

Listen to your Software Provider

As we build web sites for our clients. We strongly recommend they avoid making product claims and place the official FDA Disclaimer on each page promoting their products.

We are pointing clients to CBD-friendly credit card processors and warning them not to take the word of the agent or ISO as gospel. That they need to work directly with the processor and underwriting bank and to get everything in writing. If they don’t, it will come back to haunt them.

We also strongly suggest that, if they don’t retain one, they at least talk to an attorney about selling CBD. Even though they will warn, scare and leave you in doubt, before moving forward, it’s still a good idea to hear the pros and cons of diving into such an endeavor. Remember, everyone told Columbus he was a fool, but he still sailed into history.

Finally, listen to and follow-through on your software providers suggestions, knowledge and years of experience. Unlike product vendors, suppliers and even employees, your software provider has years of experience and typically touches every aspect of a Direct Sales companies business. From inventory to Distributors, commissions to replicated web sites and social media, your software provider will integrate with every aspect of your business and has done so with hundreds before you. Their reputation and even their own survival are on the line too. So, listen to them and take their advice when and where you can. After all, you can always verify what they are saying with an attorney… at a mere $350 an hour.

Now that almost a year has passed since General Data Protection Regulation (GDRP) became enforceable, I was anxious to learn the level of impact or influence this regulation is having on companies doing global business with the European Union today.

On May 25, 2018, the European Union’s (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) became enforceable to companies doing business in the EU. TOKENEX, one of our valued data security partners that protects our MLM software platform invited us to join their GDPR update webinar. Now that almost a year has passed, I was anxious to learn the level of impact or influence this regulation is having on companies doing business in the EU today as well as the level of consumer data protection that is being considered by other countries.

It wasn’t surprising to learn that the USA is biggest offender of the GDPR mandate. In fact, the US leads all countries in breach fees by almost double.

The Impact of a Data Breach

Some of the world largest companies like Facebook, Equifax, Google and Uber have been fined millions of dollars in breach fees. It’s obvious that no company is too big to not come under fire.

Business Gaps that Cause A Data Breach

TOKENEX identified four of the most common business gaps that cause a breach condition to be enforced under the GDPR mandate.

1. Poor Management

The “Individual right to be forgotten” requirement not being managed properly.

  • Data Inventory
  • Intra-system deletion
  • Justifiable/lawful reason to maintain

2. Failure to Implement

The controller & processor formalized business relationship document is not implemented.

  • Duration of processing
  • Nature and purpose of processing
  • Obligations and rights of the data controller and data processor

3. Notice Requirements

Notice requirements to the affected consumer is being omitted

  • Prompt notice to controller and data subjects
  • 72-hour notification to the Data Protection Authority
  • Business Continuity – disaster recovery plan

4. Lack of Data Protection Officer

The appointment of a data protection officer to oversee compliance was found lacking.

Additional Regulations

Since the implementation of GDPR in May 25, 2018 many countries are following the EU’s lead in creating legislation to regulate consumer data protection information in their respective country.

As of today, the USA has no federal mandate…yet. However, individual states like California, Massachusetts along with several others are currently creating legislation to govern consumer data privacy in their jurisdiction.

By the end of the webinar, it was obvious that GDPR is not going away. It’s going to get more complicated, stricter and we’ll see variations of this mandate being enacted and implemented by other countries around the world.

In Conclusion

At the end of the presentation, TOKENEX provided a few very important “takeaways” which helped me better understand what is happening now and where GDPR and similar legislation is heading in the near future.

  1. Regulations will get more complicated.
  2. Businesses need to define and implement a data-centric strategy to comply with these regulations.
  3. Interdepartmental involvement and communication between legal and compliance departments are critical. Too often, these departments are not on the same page leading to non-compliance.
  4. Be mindful that the law is applicable “where” the consumer resides, not where business is done.
  5. 60% of SMBs fail within 6 months of a breach due to the fine and damage to brand reputation.
  6. A company needs to plan and implement a long-term pseudonymization and data security solution as these regulations increase in scope and requirement.

Xennsoft works hand-in-hand with TOKENEX and other partners to ensure that our MLM software data protection solutions are compliant with GDPR and other arising regulations. They make it their business to help companies create and implement data-centric solutions to effectively meet the ever-changing landscape of data protection and security requirements around the world.

All images and graphs found in this presentation are taken from the TOKENEX webinar.

One year later and Billions of dollars in fines, and you’re still not listening.

A year ago, I wrote an article called, Get GDP or Get Fined 20 Million Euros, where I warned about the European Union targeting companies (and in my opinion, US companies) for security, privacy, and for anti-trust violations. Wow, Amazon just found out the hard way, that I wasn’t kidding. In 2018 alone, Amazon paid more in fines to the EU, than they did in taxes. I don’t care how much money you make, 5.1 Billion Dollars is still a hell of a lot of money.

What is GDPR

As a reminder, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe and to protect and empower EU citizens data and privacy and to set the way organizations, receive, store (or not store) use, and distribute data and control the citizen’s privacy. In a nut shell, they just got tired of their citizens data and privacy being hacked.

Now, to be fair, this was not all for security breaches, but for a number of penalties related to trade and regulation violations too. The point is however, governments, although seemly concerned about their citizens privacy (yea right!) and protection, are also looking for additional revenue – and who better to pay, then those evil conglomerates located in the US.

Is Your Data Secure?

Since my article, the EU has fined hundreds of companies from all walks of life[1], billions of dollars and the trend does not seem to be slowing. Blame it on politics or on a need for cash, the trend does not seem to be slowing. So once again, if you are looking to do business in the EU, or any other country for that matter, you had better make sure your data, policies and procedures are solid and secure. I only harp on this, because most, (in my experience, less than 10%), of the individuals in our niche’ rarely want to talk about security and at the very least, complain when we explain how “security” is a real and necessary cost-algorithm of doing business [2]. It doesn’t matter if you’re a hundred-thousand dollar a year business or do over a billion dollars a year, if your data’s not secure, one way or another, it will catch up to you and you will pay the price – be you BIG or small.

  1. Just a few (albeit, largest, of the companies hit with EU GDPR Fines in 2018
    • Amazon: 5.1 Billion
    • Apple: 15 Billion (taxes)
    • Google: 3.8 – 5.1 Billion
    • Qualcomm: 2.1 Billion
    • Facebook: 125 Million
  2. Only 29% of businesses have implemented all measures necessary to comply with the GDPR. Panda Media Center

Where I stand

First Things First (or… get to the meat!)

So, there is no question as to where I stand on the subject, here are a few things I believe about Marijuana, Cannabis and Cannabidiol (or CBD).

  1. I believe that the use of Marijuana, as a recreational drug, should be prohibited. However, I am in favor of its use for medicinal purposes, particularly when prescribed by a competent physician.
  2. I also support the continuous study of Marijuana and Cannabinoids for the mental and physical health benefits that may be derived from those studies.
  3. I believe Cannabidiols offer enormous benefits when it comes to maintaining ones’ health.
  4. I love my hemp tee-shirt. I bought it while on vacation in Mexico. It’s soft, comfortable and over 10 years old.
  5. I believe education is going to be key to the success of bringing Cannabinoids into the mainstream marketplace.
  6. Personally, I use CBD oil to control pain and to boost my immunity. For me, it works!

Learn About Comp Plans
Learn About Comp Plans

The Plants

Cannabis
Cannabis Sativa [1] is a subtype of the Cannabis plant and a relative of the Marijuana plant, but their differences are far greater than their similarities.
Marijuana
No explanation should be needed here, but for those of you who are too young to remember Cheech and Chong’s movie “Up in Smoke”, marijuana is a psychoactive drug from a particular strain of the Cannabis plant used for medical and more than not, recreational purposes. The main psychoactive part of cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)[1], one of 483 known compounds in the plant, including at least 65 other cannabinoids[2].
Hemp
Hemp, (from Old English hænep[3] )is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for the industrial uses of its derived products. It is one of the fastest growing agricultural plants and was one of the first plants to be spun into usable fiber over 10,000 years ago. Hemp can be refined into a variety of commercial items, including paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed.
CBD
CBD or Cannabidiol. is a phytocannabinoid[4] discovered in 1940. It is one of some 113 identified cannabinoids in the Cannabis plants, accounting for up to 40% of the plant’s extract. CBD can be taken in multiple ways, including by inhalation of cannabis (smoke or vapor), or as an aerosol spray into the mouth, or as an oil under the tongue or topically in the needed area. If the CBD-derived product containing less than .03% THC (or does not have the same psycho-activity as THC), and is extracted from industrial Hemp, then under the Federal Farm Bill of 2018, it is considered a non-controlled substance. Keep in mind, the growers and manufacturers of industrial Hemp, must also follow strict growing and processing guidelines and procedures as outlined in the 2014 Federal Farm Bill. Then and only then does the Cannabidiol not fall under Schedule I of the 2018 Federal Governments Farm Bill[5].
For the purposes of these product, and any time I deal with a potential client wanting to sell CBD-derived products through Multi-Level Marketing, I will always refer to this grouping of CBD products, as “Traceable CBD”.

So, in a nut shell, although they fall into the same family of cannabis sativa, Marijuana and industrial Hemp (with >.03% THC) are completely different plants. One is legal and the other, in accordance to a re-clarification of the 2018 Farm Bureau Act is not!

A Brief History of Cannabis

Cannabis has been used around the world for centuries. In most countries, it is not illegal to grow and harvest Cannabis. Here are some more recent events you should know about. If you don’t want to spend the time learning about the history of Cannabis, skip to The Legality of Cannabis in the U.S.

  • 1890: The Cannabis industry was booming. Farmers were encouraged to raise cannabis to support the Civil War effort. Many of its derivatives, (clothing, rope, canvas, sails and lamp oil), help support and even gave the U.S. Colonies the needed leg-up during the war.
  • 1906: In the U.S. the Pure Food and Drug Act is passed, regulating the labeling of products containing Alcohol, Opiates, Cocaine, and Cannabis, among others. At the time, a lot of individuals felt like the up-and-coming pharmaceutical companies lobbied hard to include cannabis in the US Controlled Substance List to eliminate the then freely harvested plant from competition.
  • 1916: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) chief scientists Jason L. Merrill and Lyster H. Dewey created paper made from hemp pulp, which they concluded was “favorable in comparison with those used with pulp wood”. In USDA Bulletin No. 404. They reported that one acre of hemp, in annual rotation over a 20-year period, would produce as much pulp for paper as 4.1 acres of trees being cut down over the same 20-year period. This process would use only 1/7 to 1/4 as much polluting sulfur-based acid chemicals to break down the glue-like lignin that binds the fibers of the pulp, or even none at all using soda ash. If the new (1916) hemp pulp paper process were legal today, it would soon replace about 70% of all wood pulp paper, including computer printout paper, corrugated boxes and paper bags.
  • 1920: The 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol and positioned marijuana as an attractive alternative leading to an increase in use of the substance.
  • 1970: The US National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) forms. That same year the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act repealed mandatory penalties for drug offenses and marijuana was categorized separately from other narcotics.
1971: First evidence suggesting marijuana may help glaucoma patients.
1972: The Nixon-appointed Shafer Commission urged use of cannabis be re-legalized, but their recommendation was ignored. U.S. Medical Marijuana research picks up pace.
  • 1986: President Reagan signed the Anti-Drug Abuse Act, reinstating mandatory minimums and raising federal penalties for possession and distribution and officially begins the U.S. international “war on drugs.”
  • 1988: DEA administrative law Judge Francis Young finds, after thorough hearings, that marijuana has a clearly established medical use and should be reclassified as a prescriptive drug. His recommendation is ignored.
  • 1992: In reaction to a surge of requests from AIDS patients for medical marijuana, the U.S. government closes the Compassionate Use program. That same year the pharmaceutical medication dronabinol is approved for AIDS-wasting syndrome.
  • 1999: Hawaii and North Dakota unsuccessfully attempt to legalize hemp farming.
  • 2014: The States of Alaska and Oregon legalize marijuana / cannabis for recreational use; the States of California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii and Massachusetts all begin to draft legalization legislation.
  • 2015: With the passage of Senate Bill 5052 Washington State medical marijuana comes fully under the control of the newly re-named Washington Liquor and Cannabis Board (LCB)
  • December of 2018, in Section 12619 of the Farm Bill [7] passed legislation, removing Hemp-Derived products (products with >.03% tetrahydrocannabinol), from its Schedule I status under the Controlled Substance Act. So, on the Federal level, it is no longer illegal to deal in CBD related products.
  • Today: Multiple organizations (WebMD, Epilepsy Society), doctors (Dr. Mehmet Oz, and Sanjay Gupta) and parents (me included) are now praising the benefits of CBD. I personally have benefited from the amazing effects of CBD, but that’s a story for another day.

There are thousands of other dates and stories about Cannabis and Cannabidiols, but for the purposes of this article, I have focused mainly on the US marketplace. Whether you agree with the moral or legal journey of Cannabis, one fact can’t be ignored, it’s here to stay and will only becoming more accepted over time.

What the Future Holds

The Legality of Cannabis in the US

With the legality and new relaxed rules surrounding the medial and recreational use of Marijuana and Traceable Cannabidiol, by inclusion, CBD oil is now legal or at least accepted now in 47 of the 50 US States.

In 1987, I owned a small but thriving telecommunications company. I remember meeting with my bother-in-law, who at the time, was a closet tecno-junkie. Dave told me that if I wanted to become rich, I should start buying up company names on this thing called the Internet. More importantly, he described how information (especially documents, books and any open data) was going to be controlled by this new storage and distribution medium. He wasn’t 100% on-track, but he was correct about one thing, this thing called the Internet was going to be “game-changing”. Sadly, I didn’t listen and he too (for whatever reason) didn’t do any of the things we talked about. We both missed out on “the next big thing”. So, will removing Traceable Cannabidiol from the Farm Bills Class 1 Controlled Substance List be the next big thing? I don’t know. I do know however, I won’t be standing by this time, watching from a distance. One thing is for sure, in the medical and health industries alone, there is a major shift coming. When it comes to the amounts that are being spent on cannabidiols terpenes and what will come to be known as “traceable” CBD products (dietary supplements, skin care, beverages, clothing and manufacturing) the amounts are going to be staggering. The early adopters, those who’ve taken the risk over the last three or four years, have seen phenomenal growth.

Are You too Late?

Not at all! The CBD Industry alone is expected to reach 20 Billion dollars by 2020 and the number of products created with traceable CBD, is projected to be even higher. One thing’s for sure, you’d better know what you’re doing or at least be wise enough to partner with those who have experience in navigating the operational and ever-changing legal waters of dealing in CBD! Sorry, probably not the best use of that particular verb.

Selling through Direct Sales, Multi-Level Marketing or through parties is complicated enough, each with its own rules and regulations, many of which are not applicable to your local mom & pop or retail outlet. Adding CBD to the mix, is guaranteed to complicate the process – dramatically!

Being Prepared to Sell CBD through MLM

Here are just a few of the issues you will need to be ready to address before you start your MLM CBD business. At the very least, you had better be able to answer these few simple questions. Doing so, will mean the difference between failure and success.

  • Is my Merchant Provider (and the underwriting bank) friendly to companies that sell through the MLM channel and now, CBD products?
This is without a doubt the most volatile part of your business. I’ve seen direct sales companies strangled and even die, because they didn’t pick the right processor and/or bank. Don’t ever take the word of the jobber or merchant re-seller when it comes to your business’ approval, and always read the fine print. Better yet, ask your software provider who they might recommend. They know which Merchant Providers are MLM friendly and more importantly, which underwriting bank will accept and work with companies selling CBD and CBD related products.
  • Am I legally set up with all the appropriate and proper paperwork?
At the very least, you will need to meet with a qualified MLM attorney. One that knows the rules of the industry and preferably, the rules surrounding high-risk sales, refunds and returns. With the advent of Cannabis to an already litigious industry, your attorney should also be actively engaged in new and ever-changing rules, regulations and yes, even the atmosphere surrounding Cannabis and the selling of CBD related products.
  • Can I Prove “Traceability”?
For CBD to be legal across the checkerboard called These United Sates, your product will need to contain less than .03% THC. And sorry, it’s not as simple as that. The most important facet of this equation is your products “Traceability”. When (and not if), but when the local or federal authority comes knocking on your door, (and if you ever have any kind of success, they will), then you had better be ready to prove that your product was derived from an innocuous strain of Cannabis called Industrial Hemp, and through every step of the process, you, not your vendors, but you, will need to show that your product (from seed to processing, packaging and delivery) supports the legal definition of “Traceability”
  • Does my software support the sale of high-risk products like CDB?
Multiple currencies, split payments, multiple payment processing paths, cross-border recruiting, and tracking are all critical to your operations and success. If the software you want to use does not support these most basic needs, you will most likely fail and will be looking for another provider once you really start to grow. Just know, if you think you can wait and address these issues or add these features later, without it affecting operations, you are wrong. You will encounter missed opportunities for expansion and success. I’ve even seen companies fail entirely as they try to make the transition from one platform to another, when these features are not supported. Do it right and do it now!
  • Am I ready and able to calculate, collect, report and correctly pay taxes on a product who’s legal and taxable rules fluctuate almost monthly?
Please don’t ever think you can track, calculate, collect report and then pay sales and use taxes by yourself. Your software system must have an automated and integrated sales tax system built in. With over 10,000 taxing jurisdictions in the US alone [7] (and it’s changing every month), you’ll want and need the security of having a reliable third party that you can refer to, lean on and fall back to, when the time arises, and it will. For MLM, I recommend Squire.
  • Does my software, infrastructure and various vendors support a national and international footprint?
This is a must. The last thing you want to do is to pause or put a hold on your companies and distributors ability to expand. Network marketers are a driven bunch of wonderful people and if you make them “wait”, they will find another company to call home. Any good software should be able to support your foray into approved and needed international markets.

Again, these are but a few, but critical questions you must have positive answers to, before launching your CBD Direct Sales company.

So, Am I Too Late?

Although there are hundreds of businesses now selling Cannabidiol products, the industry is just now scratching the surface of what will become a deep and diversified ocean of products and services surrounding and supporting the CBD industry.

The Network Marketing and Direct Sales profession hit a new record high in 2015 with $183.7 Billion in global sales[8].
By 2020, according to Direct Selling News, the CBD industry will surpass the 20 Million Dollar mark.

Indulge Me. What’s Your “Why”?

P.A. Stewart once said, “Being bold doesn’t mean you simply jump into the fire, but knowing first, where and when to jump!”

This is true of those who have been in and now want to sell Cannabidiol products. But be prepared. You will be judged, and you will be mocked, and you will have to be patient as you educate and train thousands of people as to why you are selling such an evil, controversial, good and life altering product. You will need to endure and most of all, believe in your why! If you are in it for the buck alone and don’t have a compelling or even a legitimate “why”, I suggest you wait. If you have a mission and are passionate about your “why” then by all mean, jump right in. After all, it’s only your time, money and reputation that are on the line, and why would you jeopardize those?! Oh yea, because you’re bold.
So, to the Bold I say, “Go forward and good luck in your adventure.”

Aristotle once said that, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” While you may not be up on BC era philosophy, this is a valuable lesson for business owners and entrepreneurs alike. A team working together in harmony can accomplish much more than a bunch of individuals doing their own thing. If you run a business with employees, outside agents, or individual distributors, getting them to work together is one of the most critical functions you perform. How do you get them all working together so that the whole of your results can be greater than the sum of each individual’s effort?

Case in point, just last month I was visiting one of our amazing clients and while eavesdropping in on customer service, I overheard one of the customer service representatives chastise an Independent Sales Representative for not handling one of their client’s monthly product profile for them. The Distributor simply asked if the Agent would cancel the customers order that month. Evidently funds were tight at the moment, they and simply wanted to move it to the following month. A task that would have taken the service rep no more than one minute to perform. Instead, she held her ground, in order to “make a point” and in the end, lost the company a long-term customer and almost lost the now jaded and once devoted distributor. Sure, she’ll get over it, but because the customer service representative lost sight of who she was there to serve and what should have been one of the most important goals of everyone involve, the company is out over $2,400 a year in revenue from a once loyal customer and is now spending countless-hours trying to rebuild a relationship that had taken years to solidify.

3 Ways To Improve Team Collaboration

1. A Unified Direction

When a company has both employees and independent distributors, they may not always realize that they need to head in the same direction. The vision for both groups must be in sync and it must come from the top. Once both parties have a clear, unified vision of the goals of the company, everyone performs better.

People in teams need a common goal to work toward. A vision that everyone can clearly see and get behind. If everyone on the team is out there freelancing and doing whatever they think is best, your results will be mixed at best. Regular collaboration with the various groups in your business is essential to its success.

2. It Takes A Team To Be Successful

Another issue that must be addressed is when independent agents feel like they are less important than the employees of the business. Some companies put off the vibe that the independent people are less important in the grand scheme of things. In reality, collaboration between the company and the independent contractors is critical and can make a huge difference. The goal should be to make any independent agents feel like they are just as important as anyone else in the group. If you can achieve that level of synergy, there’s no telling how far you can go.

3. Everyone Is A Key Player

One of the best things you can do as a leader is to give your people belonging queues. A belonging queue is something that tells your people, “your part of this team.” it makes them feel like they belong and that they are valued. These can come in many forms and all of them can add up, to contribute to the success of the company.

Something as simple as, weekly phone calls to your top leaders, company shirts with your logo on them or a clear and inclusive company mission statement, can make someone feel like they belong. Listening to people and making them feel like their input is valued also goes a long way. Caring about them as a person and getting to know them also makes them feel like they belong.

Regardless of how you approach the task of making all your people feel like they belong, it is essential to your success. If you can blur the line between employee and independent distributors, people will start working together as if they were all on the same team. Ultimately, the success that you’re able to achieve will be determined by how much you make people feel like they’re part of your team. Spend some time thinking about ways you can involve everyone and get them on the same page, and the sky is the limit.

Here’s a great presentation on company culture. How to build and keep it.

How is implementing the right MLM software program, feature or function like making a delicious pizza?

One of my favorite self-help success coaches is Darren Hardy. Darren Hardy is the former publisher of SUCCESS magazine, an American author and well-known keynote speaker.

Too Many Cooks in the…

Darren relates an analogy made by the late Nora Efron, a famous filmmaker and script writer of movies like, “When Harry Met Sally” and “Sleepless in Seattle” where she said that…

Delivering a script is much like delivering a big, beautiful, plain pizza that only has cheese and tomato sauce.

When you give it to the director he may say, “I love pizza and I’m willing to commit to this pizza, but I think this pizza should have mushrooms on it.” And you say, “Mushrooms! of course, that’s a great idea, why didn’t I think of that? Let’s put some on… immediately”.

Someone else comes along and suggests adding green peppers which, in their opinion is just what your pizza needs. However, you question their green pepper idea, but you accept their suggestion anyway because you want them to feel included in the process, so you allow green peppers to be added.

Then along comes somebody who suggests anchovies. That idea creates a heated debate. To settle it, you compromise and only use half the amount of anchovies they’d suggested. And, so it continues. What you end up with is a big pizza that has almost everything on it, but it’s a horrible tasting pizza…, movie, product, website, brochure, campaign, software… etc.

The message that Efron was trying to make is that working on a movie is a very collaborative effort involving many people and influences. The key to making a good movie is that someone must take command who has clear vision and direction in making the final decision on what is to be added to the movie or pizza. “If everyone’s ideas where implemented,” stated Efron, “we’d produce a movie that would be more of a bust rather than a blockbuster.”

The Secret Software Sauce Formula

Over the past 15 years of MLM software development, we concur 100% with Efron’s “collaboration and take command” formula. When adding new software programs, features and functionality to the MLM software platform “collaboration” is a necessary, crucial step. However, once the collaboration phase is over, a company stakeholder who understands the company’s vision and direction must “take command” to make the final decision on what is to be added, or not added to the software platform.

If the “take command” action is over-looked or ignored and your company allows all suggested software programs, features and functionality to be added to the platform; like the pizza, your company will have a bad tasting, poor performing, dysfunctional software solution that will make no one happy and will hurt your business.

Every single day we hear of a new threat out there that means the end of privacy. This comes mostly in the form of social media. You hear the horror stories of how you are being tracked daily. Is this all just conspiracy theory insanity?

Well, the harsh reality of things is, no, it is not just a conspiracy theory. The dark web has more information about most of us than we do in our safety deposit boxes. So, if all the information necessary to steal a person’s identity is out there, then what is the point?

Convenience Came with a Price

That is where PCI (Payment Card Industry) comes in. PCI Standards are not just about protecting information, but also ensuring that information is being transferred from a valid, uncompromised source. To be breached is every security personnel’s worst nightmare, but it is worse to not even know about it. You ask yourself, how long have they been doing this? This was the case for many business owners prior to the creation of the PCI Security Standards Council.

The PCI Security Standards Council was formed in 2006 by the major credit card companies. They saw an issue that was beginning to become a serious problem. Identity theft was only part of the problem. People began doing online transactions more and more, which was great because more money was changing hands at a much faster rate. People could now buy that 70” TV without ever leaving the comfort of their own home. This came with a price. Cyber criminals quickly caught on that they did not need to steal a person’s identity entirely anymore. If they could just intercept the transaction, they had everything they needed to max out that credit card, transfer as much as they wanted, and do all the damage before the card holder, or the card company, even knew what hit them.

Keep Moving the Door, Keep Changing the Locks

So, the birth of the PCI Security Standards Council came to pass. These credit card companies joined forces to set up standards that anyone who wished to consume their services would have to follow. This was so important to them that even though they were direct competitors they all agreed to reject anyone who did not follow these standards. I cannot even begin to cover them in this little blog post, however, click my link below if you wish to see them. The most important thing to understand is that breaches do happen, even to the largest, most powerful companies. Cyber criminals are well-motivated, large in numbers, and have the luxury of only needing to locate/exploit a hole. This is not as easy for the IT Security Specialist who spends all day every day fending off the relentless attacks from an army of hackers that spend their whole lives doing just that.

Think about castle gates. They are reinforced with stone, thick wooden doors, and steel frames. One man with a pickaxe is never getting in, however, 100 men with a battering ram will break through eventually. How do we prevent this? Well, we keep moving the door. We keep changing the locks.

The Way of the Egyptians

This may seem like an oversimplification; however, you might be surprised about how accurate it really is. When I mention changing the locks, I do not necessarily mean change your password. There are heated debates on that topic and I will not dig into that here, you can decide if changing your password often is a benefit. What I am referring to is the encryption and access keys used to navigate the system. By encrypting the database even if an intruder got the information they would not know what to do with it. This is not a new concept, people have been doing this kind of thing since before the Egyptians.

In short, the reason the PCI Security Standards Council is so important is that it provides those IT Security Specialists the checklists to ensure that they are up to date and secure. It does not just stop with your certification though; the PCI Security Standards Council is there to constantly monitor and keep you informed on changes and risks in this digital market we live in.

“To improve is to change, so to be perfect is to have changed often.”

What is a Mentor?

Everyone needs good mentors along life’s journey. Their guidance can make all the different between success and failure. A mentor is someone that is a wise and trusted adviser that has traveled the journey that you are navigating. The mentor can be young or old but has certain areas of expertise that will foster learning and development of the mentee.

Value of a Good Mentor

Throughout my life, I’ve been blessed to have associated with some amazing mentors. Each one has served a different purpose that has greatly enriched my life. The value of a good mentor can help others chart the most effective and efficient course to achieve their goals.

Network Marketing is Mentoring

Over the past 18 years of working in the MLM software arena, I’ve rubbed shoulders with some very amazing MLM professionals. I’ve met some very successful MLM distributors and executives that have built profitable sales organizations all around the world. From each relationship, I have been able to take-away specific characteristics and attributes that has helped me in my professional and personal life. The one thing that seemed to be common among them is they all had great mentors. And, they accredited much of their success to the coaching and examples of their mentors.

One of my favorite virtual mentors that I tune into every day is Darren Hardy. His coaching and challenges have been instrumental in helping me create value and productivity in my day. In one of his recent segments he shared insight on what to look for in a good mentor. He said you must identify your key goals and the skills that you want to acquire to achieve success. Once you’ve made that connection, go out and find someone that has done it.

  • If your goal is to get into better shape, then find someone that is physically fit.
  • If your goal is to become a great husband, then find a great mentor husband.
  • If your goal is to develop a better relationship with God, then find a spiritual mentor.
  • If you want to build a successful MLM or Party Plan business, then establish relationships with those MLM professionals that have been there, done that.

Lastly, Darren ends with an easy-to-do questionnaire to help identify mentors.

  • Has your mentor been where you are headed?

  • Has your mentor achieved what you want to do?

  • Is your mentors approach easy to understand and duplicatable?

Even though these questions may seem simple and obvious they are very effective in finding mentors that may help you achieve your goals.

What is up with bitcoins and cryptocurrency and why is it all the rave in the financial world? With all the discussions, debates and forums across social media platforms, financial articles and news segments, what does this mean for merchants and payment security? More specifically, what will it mean for direct selling, MLM and party plan modeled companies and technology providers that support the space.

Being a novice myself, I decided to do some research into this financial phenomenon to learn what type of impact this type of currency may have on the direct sales industry.

Where to Begin

To begin, we need to educate ourselves on what digital currency is and what is the technology behind it. From that point, we can identify the possible implications it may have on our industry and unique business model. Some of our partners have excellent articles that will help us build our knowledge base. Let’s start with understanding the technology called “Blockchain.”

Excerpt #1

Blockchain is a technology that allows for the creation of a history of data that is immutable, meaning it can never be changed, either accidentally or intentionally. This data that has been added to a blockchain is extremely resistant to hacking or other attempts to tamper with it. This makes it especially suitable for situations in which parties want to be in a position to prove what actually happened, i.e. what data or content existed at a particular point in time, with no possibility of changing history after the fact. Read More…

Excerpt #2

Bitcoins and blockchain are among the buzziest words in the fintech world. Both have been making recent headlines given each’s impact on the payments industry. But will either be hangin’ tough and able to withstand the scrutiny that comes with new innovations and disruptors? While the debate rages on about the value and ultimate longevity of each type of technology, many organizations are considering the pros and cons of each and considering how they may fit into their larger processes in the future. Read More…

In a later article, I will summarize my finding and publish what it may mean to our MLM industry. Stay tune!
