What is up with bitcoins and cryptocurrency and why is it all the rave in the financial world?   With all the discussions, debates and forums across social media platforms, financial articles and news segments, what does this mean for merchants and payment security?  More specifically, what will it mean for direct selling, MLM and party plan modeled companies and technology providers that support the space.

Being a novice myself, I decided to do some research into this financial phenomenon to learn what type of impact this type of currency may have on the direct sales industry.

Where to Begin

To begin, we need to educate ourselves on what digital currency is and what is the technology behind it.  From that point, we can identify the possible implications it may have on our industry and unique business model.  Some of our partners have excellent articles that will help us build our knowledge base.  Let’s start with understanding the technology called “Blockchain.”

Switching your MLM software?

Over the past twenty years in network marketing, I’ve been involved in several migrations from one software provider to another. For the majority of those years, I worked on the network marketing corporate side.  Recently I’ve had the experience of working on the software vendor side. As a premier provider of MLM software, Xennsoft does many migrations for our clients every year. I’d like to share a couple of lessons learned that might help your company should you choose to switch MLM software, for whatever reason.

Listen to your heart

Recently, a colleague and I came up with a brilliant analogy that correlates switching your MLM software to having open-heart surgery.  My father recently went through a triple-bypass heart surgery, so I’m familiar with some of the complications he went through.

My father’s condition was very serious and the blood flow to his heart was restricted due to a severely clogged artery. Doctors told him he wouldn’t have survived a heart attack which could have happened at any time.  The scary thing is that my dad had minimal symptoms. He truly had no idea how close he was to death.

Likewise, there may be some things affecting your business, a silent killer you might know nothing about. It could be something like a security breach of your customer data or violations of PCI compliance. What about the new GDPR regulations that will go into effect in the EU in May 2018? Perhaps its the FTC, or other regulatory bodies in various countries that monitor product claims, formulations, etc. It could be your compensation plan paying out too much/too little or even incorrectly. Or maybe your software and supporting infrastructure is not scalable as you begin to grow. Any of these things could eventually lead to disaster. Sometimes there is just no way to know where the “attack” will come from.

Weigh the risks versus rewards

Whatever the reason, sometimes it makes sense to switch providers when the life or longevity of your company is at risk. In many cases, it may not be life or death, but you may want a better quality of life or greater capacity to reach your long-term goals. After all, with a “bad heart”, you won’t be climbing mountains anytime soon.  In these cases, it makes sense to switch providers to have better security, better performing software, additional features, ability to do custom development, or lower overall costs.

Just know that there are always risks when switching MLM software. Anyone that tells you otherwise is lying to you. Just like there is a risk of death, although small, when going into open heart surgery, there is likewise a risk that if you don’t take this seriously and plan accordingly, you could kill your company. Unfortunately, we have seen this happen with companies and it’s never pleasant.

Find the right doctor

Just like finding the right doctor is key, a critical first step is making sure you don’t put your company’s life at risk by going with an inexperienced company that is a newcomer to the MLM software space. The opposite is also true. Going with an “old doctor” that isn’t up on the latest life-saving techniques can also present problems. Companies that have been around forever may be built on ancient code that is very costly to update. Do your homework. Spend time evaluating the software.  Look at the track record of the company you are investigating. Ask hard questions. Sometimes it’s easy to think “cheap”, but it’s advisable to look at price last. Make sure they have all the features you need, or can build them for you within a reasonable cost and time-frame. Just like you wouldn’t go across the border to find a “cheap” doctor to do open heart surgery on you, it’s important to realize that in both life and business you often get what you pay for.

Get ready for the pain

It’s a simple fact that open heart surgery is painful, and it takes months to recover. What many don’t realize is that implementing new MLM software is also painful. And yes, it’s not uncommon to also take months to recover. People get so focused on all the new and exciting features, they often forget it could take weeks or months to get to the point where those features will actually outweigh the initial risks. If your system is severely shocked from the trauma, it can take even longer to recover. It’s important to follow the prescriptions given to you by your software partner so that you can minimize the pain.

Don’t rush the process

If you were laying on the operating table with your chest completely open, and someone came in and told the doctor that he had to wrap up a typical 12-hour operation in just 4 hours, how do you think that would make you feel? What shortcuts would the doctor take to put you back together? The same holds true for a MLM software migration and implementation. Doctors and project managers alike follow a rigorous process and generally know what to expect based on past experience.

If your new software vendor tells you that they can migrate your data and launch you in just a couple of weeks, run the other way… and fast! It’s time to find a new doctor. Rushing the process will lead to shortcuts and shoddy workmanship. Instead of stitching you up properly, you may be left exposed to dangerous (and often unforeseen) consequences down the road. It’s fine to demand timelines from your provider. Just make sure they are realistic or you’re putting your company at enormous risk.

Mitigate the risks by communication

My dad’s doctor clearly communicated the process he needed to heal. Similarly, it’s imperative that you communicate with both your corporate team and field leadership about the possible challenges that you may face. Proper planning, processes, and mitigating any deadly side effects (i.e. serious software glitches that impact your bottom line), all play a vital role in the success of the operation (i.e. implementation). What facilitates all this is good communication.  Both the patient (i.e. the company) and the support staff (internal and external) must communicate and work together effectively for a proper recovery to take place.

Have adequate support staff and train them well

Getting your heart repaired isn’t a one-man job. As talented as the surgeon may be, he does not operate solo. He relies on a trained support staff. These positions carry out many important roles in the operating room, intensive care, and physical therapy. Likewise, a successful MLM software implementation requires a solid support staff. We have found that both corporate marketing and customer support play a critical role in this process. By disseminating valuable information both internally and to the field in a timely manner, they can address training and support issues before they become a problem.

As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Make sure to properly train your staff on the new system and that they in turn, teach the field how to use it. This will save a lot of heartache. Above all else, make sure your software vendor can provide you the support you need. It’s all well and good to get a new heart, but if there is nobody to take care of you after the surgery, things will go downhill fast.

Learn to walk before you run

Doctors want you up and walking for short stints a day or two after the operation. However, if you were foolish enough to try running a 5k after surgery, you’d pass out from the pain and put your body into shock, further endangering your heart and chance of recovery. The same adage “learn to walk before you run” also holds true with MLM software implementation. Get your system up and running properly before implementing any grandiose plans that require additional custom development.

The reason for this is simple. The shock of a system migration alone can be hard enough on a company, not to mention drastically changing processes, commission plans, or large program changes. Adding additional changes on top of everything else can bring about more stress and further weaken the company. Strong companies can generally bounce back just fine. However, those with a weakened immune system (i.e. poor company culture, lack of funding, no clear direction) may never fully recover.

Switch your MLM Software with confidence

Overall, heart surgery often outweighs the risk of impending death by prolonging life and also improving the quality of life after recovery. The same holds true for many companies that elect to switch MLM software. With proper planning, realistic management of expectations, and supportive follow-up care, your company can reach new levels of peak performance. It can be terrifying to make that leap. Securing sensitive data is one of the most critical things you can do in today’s modern age of online transactions and digital data storage. It’s amazing the number of security breaches that happen, even with well-known and respected Fortune 500 companies. Having your sensitive data hacked and stolen can lead to massive penalties and fines, not to mention the loss of trust from your customers. Losing your customers’ trust correlates directly with lost revenue.

Although nobody is immune to rogue data breaches, when looking at solution providers to trust with your critical and sensitive business data, be sure you understand how they secure your data.

Encryption vs. Tokenization

Both encryption and tokenization are used to protect sensitive cloud data (particularly payment data) but they differ in how each function. Encryption essentially replaces data with a “scrambled” or unreadable value that can only be read by an authorized entity that has the same encryption keys that were originally used to create the value. The main problem with this method is that hackers are continuously exploiting encryption by using powerful computers and clever software to decrypt it.  Encryption’s inherent weakness is that it can be reverse engineered back to the original data.

Tokenization, on the other hand, adds an extra layer of security. It basically takes those same encrypted values, but “tokenizes” them (i.e. converts the data into a mathematically unrelated value) and stores these “tokens” in a secure data vault. The token is then sent back to the merchant to use for future transactions.

Advantages of Tokenization

Having a tokenization solution versus using encryption alone has multiple advantages.

  1. The credit or debit card number is never accepted by the merchant in an unencrypted state.
  2. No version of the card number is stored or transmitted by the merchant, only the token that represents it.
  3. Tokens stolen by hackers due to a data breach are completely useless because they cannot be reverse-engineered back to the original card number.
  4. The keys to tokenization are stored in a secure cloud vault, unreachable by hackers.

Protect Your Customer’s Data

In order to protect your customers’ data and to be fully PCI Compliant, make sure your merchant software provider is using both encryption and tokenization, as encryption alone is not sufficient.

Why is the price to purchase an MLM software system so different among software providers in the direct selling space?  Don’t they all offer replicated websites, manage distributor downlines, process orders and pay commissions?

The ole adage, “you get what you pay for” has always implied that “high price equals higher quality”.  I believe that holds true for just about anything you buy whether it be a car, a house, or even a white dress shirt.

Do I buy that white dress shirt from Walmart or Nordstrom?  Well, it depends.  If I want something cheaply made that looks run-of-the mill at a cut-rate price that hangs on me like a drape and undoubtedly will become a rag after a couple of washing, Walmart is the ticket. However, if I want a quality made double-stitched dress shirt with a split back yoke, curved hems, raised placket, button-down collar, adjustable button cuffs with perfect-fit alterations that will stand the test of time, backed by an amazing return policy, Nordstrom is my store.

Is it so surprising then to find that the dress shirt I purchased from Nordstrom is 5 times more money than the one I purchased from Walmart?  Hmm…Browsing their respective online shopping catalogs, they look almost identical.  But after personally experiencing and wearing each shirt, I quickly realized there are huge “material” differences.

So, what does buying white shirts have to do with purchasing MLM software?

Many unaware purchasers assume that the cost to purchase an MLM software system is the initial out-of-pocket price.  If that were the case and if all MLM software providers systems were built equally, the natural selection option would be the one with the lowest price. Right?

Wrong! A purchaser must understand two very important fundamental buying truths. First, MLM software is NOT created equally and second, the “get what you pay for” adage holds true with buying MLM software just like it applies to buying white shirts.

How can this be? Let’s say that I need to quickly replace the cheap white shirt from Walmart with a better one from Nordstrom. Fortunately, the cost to replace the cheap white shirt with a better one is easy to do with minimal risk to me. On the other hand, if I need to replace a cheap, dysfunctional MLM software system that doesn’t meet my needs, it’s not easy to do and can become very expensive to my business.  The replacement cost can quickly supersede the initial purchase price by 10 to 100-fold. It’s important to understand that cost comes in many undesirable forms that could undermine the growth of your business and the livelihood of your distributors.

Cost of the Inability to Scale

Cost can come in the form of the software not being able to meet the growing demands of your business.  Many cheap software solutions offer limited, inflexible platforms where you are required to model your MLM business after the functionality and capability of their software.  These types of software solutions may work for companies whose business model is NOT to grow or experience change.  However, this is a ridiculous, counter-intuitive notion.  Growth and change are fundamental business drivers that grow and prosper network marketing businesses.

Ask yourself, if the MLM software system can’t scale to grow as I grow, how much would lack of scalability cost my business?

Cost of the Lack of Innovation

Cost can come in the form of outdated technology that struggles to keep pace with changes in the market place. What worked yesterday, may not work tomorrow. There are several well-known companies that felt the devastating impact from their lack of innovation.  You may have heard of Blockbuster, Polaroid, Nokia and BlackBerry. Once thriving companies, now, nowhere to be found except in case studies published in Business Management books.

Unfortunately, there are several MLM software platforms that offer few upgrades or enhancements to their systems because the cheap price they market weakens their ability to invest funds in new product development, R&D and innovation outside of their operating expenses.

Ask yourself, if my MLM software system doesn’t provide new features or functionality to help me be more competitive, cost-effective and operation efficient, how much would lack of innovation cost my business?

Cost of Insufficient Support

The on-going support pricing structure of the MLM software provider is in direct correlation to their ability to properly support the needs of your business.  As an MLM grows from 1 to 1,000,000 distributors or expands from 1 to 20 different markets, their IT and client support service needs will grow exponentially.

One thing that is common among the MLM software providers is the need for good IT talent to build and support the software they market. Programmers, QA, Business Analysts, Designers, Commission Plan Experts, do not come cheap and are not readily found in the US market. And when they are found, there is stiff competition and huge salaries to contend with.

Due to the high demand and low supply in the US market, many cheap MLM software providers have resorted to offshore software development and support strategies to keep their cost down so they can continue to compete with a low price. Unquestionably, the hourly rate for an offshore programmer is less, however; there are several hidden costs that come in less obvious forms until it’s too late. Lack of MLM business understanding and experience which produces a low quality of work.  Missed deadlines, poor project management, time and language barriers that frustrate and kill projects, to name a few.

The only way an MLM software provider can lock in a fixed price arrangement at a low price is to sell more software systems.  The undesirable side effect to this revealing scenario is the software providers inability to provide or even afford to give you the proper and timely support that you’ll need, when you need it.

Ask yourself, if my MLM software providers support fees are static and capped, how can they afford to increase their support resources and bandwidth when I become a multi-million-dollar company with tens of thousands of distributors?

Cost of System Conversion

One day, and usually at the most inopportune time of a company’s existence, that cheap software that they once thought exciting and a great deal… doesn’t scale, is calculating commissions incorrectly, doesn’t expand internationally, offers little to no customization that you need, is built on outdated and inflexible technology, is found to have insufficient system security that is easily hacked and attacked by cyber-criminals, there’s little to no on-going training and support from the provider, and the list goes on.

That cheap priced software is now costing the company huge in lost revenue, dissatisfied distributors, poor reputation, and that’s just the beginning.  How could this happen? Simple math does not lie.  If you have a provider with a fixed price that is not relational to your growth chances are they have no money to invest in you.

Ask yourself, am I willing to risk the growth, stability and reputation of my company to the possibility of a software conversion?

What makes me the expert of MLM Software?

Experience. The reason I can speak so boldly to these unwanted, costly pitfalls is that these are the very complaints and tragedies that I hear repeatedly from companies that initially settled for a cheap software solution and things went wrong.  They are forced to frantically seek and migrate their tapped out MLM software system to a scalable MLM software solution that will solve their problems and save their company.

If what I’m sharing sounds like a scare tactic, “it is”, and this really happens, more times than not.  If Xennsoft could find a way to market a cheap price system that offers the quality, reliability, scalability, security, that you would expect from an enterprise-level software system, we would be offering it. But… it doesn’t exist.

In Direct Sales, vendors and owners alike have, for years, ignored the traditional avenues for shopping – including the online shopping cart.  With most of their focus on “recruiting”, ‘auto-ship’ and ‘marketing’ to a limited niche, there wasn’t much need for a retail-centric shopping cart.  Then Party Plan companies came along, changing that mindset, somewhat, but not to the level of an Amazon or Walmart per say.

A Different Approach

Typically, web designers and digital store owners in the industry, believe that if the business provides a bunch of options on the checkout page like ‘log in to continue’, ‘add to wish list’, ‘share’, ‘buy later’ or other features, it is providing their customers added benefits.  Xennsoft, on the other hand, has taken a different approach. In today’s modern age of information and data analysis, it seems we can never consume enough of it. We’re constantly being inundated with data and we often wrestle with business analytics to determine how we should run things. Companies can spend fortunes on gathering and interpreting this data.

Big data is the new buzzword and according to Google, it’s basically a term that refers to extremely large data sets that may be analyzed computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations, especially relating to human behavior and interactions. Big data can be analyzed for insights that lead to better strategy with respect to business decisions.

Get Your Data

We have seen this trend explode recently in the network marketing industry. Your software vendor and application software should be able to provide you with this data in all its unfettered glory. If used properly and effectively, it can be a valued asset that can reap generous rewards.

However, we have often seen this data used in ways that can create self-imposed limitations and lead to what is called analysis paralysis. Wikipedia says that analysis paralysis is a state of over-analyzing or overthinking a situation so that a decision or action is never taken, in effect paralyzing the outcome.

Analyising Your Data

Sometimes we are so addicted to data and analyzing the results that we can’t see the forest for the trees. Here are a few simple steps that might help in these situations:

  • Recognize there is no such thing as a perfect decision. No matter how much information you have, there will always be more. Sometimes it’s best to act and then be prepared to adapt quickly if you’re not seeing the results you expect.
  • Set a deadline. Analyzing data can be painstaking and can often lead to spinning your wheels. By creating a “drop dead” date on your decisions, you can avoid wasting time and eliminate endless meetings.
  • Use past decisions to guide you by thinking about what has worked previously. Although past performance isn’t always a guarantee of future outcomes, more often than not you will achieve success by emulating past accomplishments.
  • Look for ways to test out your ideas on users using low-risk methods. You’ll learn more by launching a minimum viable product and getting feedback from your user base, than frequently adding to the list of requirements of your unfinished project or product.

Every company needs to fully understand how big data can improve customer engagement strategies. Data-driven marketing is not just the wave of the future, it’s the here and now. The sooner you can use that valuable data to bring about positive change to your company, the sooner you’ll understand just how valuable it really is.

If you’re like 92% of the people who made a New Year’s Resolution this year of setting goals, by now, you’ve probably already given up.  I get it.  It’s hard.  After all, going to the gym week after week or sticking to the latest fad diet is no easy task, especially if you try to swallow your entire bucket of goals all at once.  So, how about we start over and work on some baby-steps that will help get you a little further down that life-altering road to success. Hey, it worked for Bob, so it will definitely work for you!

Breaking down the end-goal with small, realistic day to day and even hour by hour changes will make that larger insurmountable task seem much more attainable. Practice these rules and I guarantee, you will do better.

Remember…
It’s okay to fail

Don’t let failure keep you from starting over or setting goals. It’s okay to fail, as long as you don’t give up. Failing gives you just one more way in which not to do it the next time around.  Don’t believe me? Just ask the guy who invented the light bulb or the guy who came up with, what everyone thought at first was a stupid looking mouse (aka “Micky”). They didn’t give up.

Keep It simple

Take one goal at a time, one week at a time, or even one day at a time. The goal here (pun intended) is to form a habit. Did you know it takes two to twelve months (not 21 days) to form a new habit? When I set my goal to work out no less than four times a week, after just three weeks, I wasn’t keeping my goal at all (yea, I’m one of the 92%ers).  What I did realize, was that once I was in my work-out clothes, it was a lot easier for me to slide right into my work out. So, I changed my goal. My new goal, was to simply change into my work-out clothes after I got home. It may not sound like a big deal, but it made all the difference. I’m now working out four to five times a week.

Write it down/Have a system

A goal not written is only a wish! This sounds silly, but people who write down their goals are far more likely to achieve more, make more money and live happier lives. If you’re not even willing to write your goal down, then you’re not really that serious about succeeding. Stick a post-it-note on your mirror and have someone check up on you. You can do this!

Consume motivational material when setting goals

Keeping your brain, emotions, and attitude infused with positive, uplifting and motivational materials each and every day, is critical to your success. Think about any successful person you know and I’ll guarantee you, they don’t sit around binging on the latest Netflix miniseries.  Start focusing on your future, by continually feeding your mind, body, spirit and soul with positive life-altering content.  This will make a sizable impact towards your success.

In the end, if you learn from your failures, keep it simple, create a system that works for you, feed your body, mind and soul with a positive diet, you will be a better, more successful person.

Cleaning the house and rearranging the furniture to allow guests to come by your home for an evening is now a thing of the past. You can now have a successful party right from the comfort of your home via your mobile phone, ipad, laptop, or computer.

Anyone can see that the world has changed drastically over the past 5 years in social media and in connectivity between people. Lets take Facebook as an example; you can now do a Facebook Live presentation where people can join in from literally anywhere with internet connection including the beach, the café, or in the comfort of their own home.

More people are hosting parties online to drive sales in their party plan business. A live virtual party is much like a home party, but instead of having people coming to your home, you invite guests to participate online through social media.

Just last week I joined a Facebook Live presentation where there were over 400 people who joined in. Try fitting 400 people in your home and see how well that goes.

There are many benefits to having virtual parties. Some of the biggest benefits I see is that you no longer have a time or distance barrier, which normally would be limited based on your locality. People can also watch at their leisure. You also do not have to drive, which takes time, gas, and mileage, which can also have an environmental impact.

At Xennsoft we plan for the future and have made it possible to share a link via your favorite social media platform. By doing this people will be able to place orders easily and conveniently through your party. This is a great way to track all your party orders to a specific hostess for a specific party.

Here are a few ideas that can help you have a successful virtual party:

Organize your party

You will want to pick a time and date that you can stick with. You will want to invite a list of guests, I recommend creating an event through your Facebook page and other social media platforms to which you belong. You will also want to send out emails to invite and remind people of your party and keep it personalized. This will help support your hostess in extending invitations to her party prior to your event. Remember to track those who show up to your party. Remember some people will flow in and out throughout your party. Keep them engaged by posting regularly and respond to any questions they have. You may want to post pinnables, links and giveaways. Create urgency! You might do this by, limiting prizes that are given out or limiting bonus products where you can take advantage of impulse buying. While parties can and do take on a life of their own, it’s important for the organizers to have some sort of itinerary to keep moving forward. Make sure you know how long the party will run, when it will end, and what the limitations are with the platform you will be using. As of the writing of this article, Facebook Live limits you to 90 minutes.

People have used Facebook, YouTube, Ustream, Google+, GoToMeeting, Join.me, Periscope and even personal websites. Xennsoft can also help companies with their own official virtual party software. Overall, remember to be impromptu and keep things personal and real.

Highlight your Hostess

Your hostess is the key to your success. When they feel your support they will be excited and motivated to take the steps that will make your parties popular. This will also help build attendee numbers and ultimately your success.

Promote through Social Media Platforms

Use photos and video in posts in anticipation of the event. You may want to make a short video of your hostess inviting friends and family to the party. Create images that you and your hostess can tweet, pin, or post that may contain product shots, dates and times, and perhaps a testimonial when possible.

Finalizing your Party

The end of your party is very important. At this point you will want to invite your attendees to make a purchase and encourage them be a party host/hostess. For those who were not able to attend the party let them know that they can watch and order at their leisure. Consider having an “after-party” special after your party ends, we recommend up to 48 hours. Remember to follow up with your host/hostess within 24 hours after the party closes to give them sincere thanks and gratitude for hosting the party.
